Hardcovers bound in full leather. The bindings are worn and show heavy scuffing and abrasions. Hinges sound and the text blocks are secure. The spine title label on Volume III is chipped. There are also later paper shelf labels on the spines of Volumes I-III, and some of these are chipped. The text of the volumes are toned and foxed, and some have damping about the edges. Volume I has an early signature of Charles G. Spaight (graduated UNC in 1820, son of NC Gov. Richard Dobbs Spaight. Charles died in 1831 before taking his seat in the NC House of Commons). Volume II has the signature of "E. Wilkins" and ink-stamped name of Edmund Wilkins. There is also a pencil signature of W. W. Peebles, 1866. Volume III has a signature of "W. W. Gowen (?) / Jackson, N.C". Volume IV has a printed name label of "Asa Biggs" (1804-1878. Served in both chambers of the U.S. Congress; part of the North Carolina Constitutional Convention in 1835 and was a Federal Judge. He was also part of the secession convention of N.C. in 1861 and was a Judge of the Confederate District Court of North Carolina 1861-65). This volume is also signed by both W. W. Peebles and Waltrous Beckwith. Volume IV has suffered more interior damping than the other volumes, and the rear cover has several dark stains and deep gouges in the leather.
