Description: Card mounted photograph (7” by 9” mount) of four barbers in a fancy barber shop, possibly in New York City, circa 1900s to 1910s. No photographer or publisher identified. Neither the location of the shop nor the names of the barbers are identified. The view shows four young men in white coats standing by their barbers’ chairs with a counter and mirrors behind them. There is so much to see in this image. Both gaslight and electric fixtures hang from the ceiling. There is a National cash register on the marble counter facing the barbers’ chairs, as well as barber bottles and shaving accessories. Note the wall of shaving mugs at the back of the room, with some of them numbered. There’s a brass towel heater there, and some sort of electrical contraption at center in the room. It’s flanked by spittoons, and there are seats for waiting customers at right. Note also the display case filled with cigars in cigar boxes. There’s a sign for cigars there. There are also two Colgate Shaving Soap signs on the wall and the marble counter. Above the cubbyholes filled shaving mugs, there’s a statue of a husky dog. The only clue to the location is a sign on the far wall that reads Engage the….Lyric Orchestra, for your affairs, R.E. Woodruff, 716 Lafayette St. There is a Lafayette Street in Manhattan. This sort of high end tonsorial establishment would almost certainly be in a larger city. The card mounted photograph is in very good condition with only very light wear and soiling. There’s just a bit of rubbing at the corners of the mount. The photograph exhibits very good tonal range and shows very good detail. There is a corner crease at bottom right, about ¾” in, but this must have been done when the photograph was mounted on the card (no crease in the mount). A great early barber shop image!
