Description: I bought this lamp at an antique shop in Philadelphia about 40 years ago. The shop owner told me that it was from the 18th century. I brought it back on the plane with me and have loved it ever since. It was made before they discovered kerosene (wiki below). It adjusts from just under 5 ft. tall to over 6 ft. tall. Solid bronze with a cast iron weight it the bottom. Mica panels in the lamp portion. The body flips down and tilts the candle for easy lighting. I had this on ebay about 20 years ago but it didn't reach the reserve. It did get up to almost $2,000.00 but I decided not to sell it and removed it. I am inclined again to sell it so now you can have this marvelous museum piece. I can't find any markings on it, but the mica, the candle and solid bronze certainly dates it. The ship portrayed would have been current international travel of that period. Amazing. Like having a 747 on a lamp today. I included a comparison of three different levels of extension. If it were made after 1846 in probably would have been kerosene, not candle. It does say Elizabethan Galleon on the ship. It is very hard to find a comparison because it is so rare. If you google "18th century lighting mica" you will see quite a few similar designs. The candle lamps always had ventilation...usually 3 on top like this one. From Wiki: In 1846 Abraham Pineo Gesner invented a substitute for whale oil for lighting, distilled from coal. Later made from petroleum, kerosene became a popular lighting fuel. Modern and most popular versions of the kerosene lamp were later constructed by Polish inventor and pharmacist Ignacy Łukasiewicz, in Lviv in 1853.[4][5][6][7] It was a significant improvement over lamps designed to burn vegetable or sperm oil.
