Description: Here we have a rare, Wm E Stieren was born in Prussia in 1835. He came to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1863 and is listed as an optician and mathematical instrument maker from that time till 1888. William Stieren was a little known Pittsburgh, PA instrument maker and dealer of surveying instruments. Information on him on the Internet is rather scant and his instruments rarely come up for sale. Must-have for any nautical collection or display. It was purchased from an estate sale of a former marine who appreciated antiques. Nevertheless this antique surveyor transit instrument is a true gem for collectors and enthusiasts alike. Crafted from brass, (12.08 pounds -before packing) Made in the United States and is a testament to the precision and craftsmanship of its time. Condition: It appears to have been well-preserved, allowing for accurate readings and measurements although I am unqualified to test its present operational condition. it does show some patina , consistant with age.
