Description: This mask was purchased in 1998 at Leon d’Oro, a Venetian shop that specializes in Commedia dell’arte marionettes and masks. Scaramouche was a stock Commedia character in the 16th-century Italian theater — an unreliable and unscrupulous servant known for being boastful and cowardly. Nasone masks were more commonly worn by adventurous young men or in Venetian theatre. They were usually paired with high boots, feathered hat, and cape. The mask is made of paper mache, hand-painted, and has a black satin ribbon for tying on the back of the head. It is in excellent condition.
