Description: Cincinnati Bengals Offensive Playbook Akili Smith Mini Camp April 30-May 2, 2000 Cincinnati Bengals Offensive Playbook Akili Smith Mini Camp April 30-May 2, 2000 Click image to enlarge Description Offensive playbook issued to quarterback Akili Smith for the 2000 Cincinnati Bengals Mini Camp held between April 28 and May 2, about 200 pages, housed in a Bengals orange 3-ring binder, in very good condition. There is a label with Smith's name on the top of the spine. He was the Bengal's first draft choice and third overall pick in the 1999 draft and played the 1999 season as a backup. This mini camp was the first held by the team prior to the start of the 2000 season. Those responsible for creating the offensive playbook were head coach Bruce Coslet and offensive coordinator Ken Anderson. The playbook is divided into seven sections of varying length: 1) General Information (about the mini camp), 12 pages, 2) Offensive Football Info (needed by quarterbacks to call and execute plays), 31pages, 3) Fronts (how to identify and describe defensive fronts), 17 pages; 4) Coverages, 23 pages; 5) Runs, 38 pages, 6) Protections (offensive line formations against different defensive coverages) 45 pages, and 7) Passes, 35 pages. Laid in the binder is a 7-page schedule for the 2000 Off-Season Program Part II for player physical training during the period between June 13 to June 23. I have attached images of several pages in the playbook to illustrate what is in each section. A number of the pages are annotated with highlighting and written comments, presumably by Akili Smith. While the playbook is almost 25 years old, I do not doubt that many of the plays and passes are similar to those used today by NFL teams and the terminology to describe them is just as complex. I acquired the playbook at a Ventura, California flea market recently. There is nothing in the playbook that says that it is the property of the Cincinnati Bengals, is confidential, or must be returned to the team under any circumstances.
