Description: This fascinating and rare Guro Mask from the Ivory Coast of Africa is hand carved, hand crafted, and hand painted. It is signed by the artist, which is highly unusual. This mask features a melange of human and animal features, is brightly painted, and wears an elaborate headress sructure evocative of a bird. The colors include a bright, clay colored pink, teals, and bright greens. Examining the back of the mask you can see the raw wood, and how it is scooped out by hand. You can also view the artist's signature. This mask looks incredible hung on the wall. It can be the focal point of a room, or add to an existing collection. It is sculptural, creating a sense of depth, both catching the light and casting interesting shadows. The mask is quite tall, creating a long, slim, and elegant vertical silhouette. A Guro mask represents the spirit of Gu. Gu is a supernatural being and the wife of Zamble. Gu represents a young woman of great beauty, and is often depicted as elegant, graceful, serene and beautiful. Guro masks are elegant, usually long with pointed chins, and generally colorful with a skillful combination of human and animal forms. Notable features are almond shaped eyes, rounded foreheads, finely sculptured nose and mouth with small but sprouting lips. Hairdos and headdress are delicately sculptured and elaborate.
