Description: Independent People is an epic novel by Nobel laureate Halldor Laxness, originally published in two volumes in 1934 and 1935; literally the title means "Self-standing [i.e. self-reliant] folk". It deals with the struggle of poor Icelandic farmers in the early 20th century, only freed from debt bondage in the last generation, and surviving on isolated crofts (crofts are enclosed areas of land, usually small) in an inhospitable landscape. The novel is considered among the foremost examples of social realism in Icelandic fiction in the 1930s. It is an indictment of materialism, the cost of the self-reliant spirit to relationships, and capitalism itself. This book, along with several other major novels, helped Laxness win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1955. The copy we offer is the 1946 English translation of the book, translated by J. A. Thompson and published by Alfred A. Knopf. Here’s something else about our copy of the book that I think is interesting. This was the August, Book-of-the Month Club selection. We know this because of the Book of the Month Club label enclosed. See the picture - the book we have went to book club member Mr. Howard D. George in Wichita Kansas. Independent People is a great story, and we have a great copy of the book. You can have our copy for $18.95 - and I’ll take care of the shipping. You will love it.
