The killing of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was to change the 20th Century forever. It changed the lives of men who fought on land, at sea and in the air and for those who were left at home, their only comfort was often in the songs that flooded onto the world of entertainment being performed in music halls and theatres, and through a rapidly growing, although somewhat ‘scratchy’ world of the 78rpm record. For the troops at the sharp end of the action, many tunes became their only means of thoughts of home and loved ones left behind, some titles were aimed at the enemy and often mimicked their leaders. As is often the way with men who are confined and restricted, the words were often changed to suit the conditions they were enduring, the coarse humour of the changed lyrics often being their only relief from constant bombardment or trying to survive in trenches that were over their boots with mud and unspeakable residue. Some of the included tunes had more than one variation and the listener may be able to add some other lyrics that they too became familiar with, perhaps through their own military service. The war to end all wars failed to achieve that patriotic theme, nor was it all over by Christmas. As Britain marks the centenary of this senseless slaughter, some may feel that the world has failed to learn the lessons from those dark years between 1914 and 1918. Many men volunteered and failed to return to that, ‘land fit for heroes’. Many families were changed forever. The words ‘Lest we forget’ may never have been more appropriate as we celebrate this great war, the humour in many of the included tunes only serving as a reminder to what men can endure under hardship. If you join in the choruses perhaps it may be fitting to recall the words from Rupert Brooke’s war poem, The Soldier “and laughter, learnt of friends, and gentleness, in hearts at peace under an English heaven”.
