Description: *MINTY RARE GENDAITO TANTO* WWII Japanese Samurai Sword NIHONTO WW2 Shin Gunto Description: I BUY SWORDS AND WHOLE COLLECTIONS! CONTACT US with any questions! 804 23 9 549 0 Item Description: I am pleased to offer this original hand-made Japanese sword, or Nihonto, brought back from WWII. The sword is a rare Gendaito tanto, made ca. 1940’s, by the famous swordsmith Ki Masatsugu in high quality lacquered mounts. The blade and the mountings are in Near MINT condition. The sword has a blade length of 7.25 inches (18cm) making it a tanto. The blade features a ridgeless hira-zukuri construction. The blade shows a well-grained and tight ko-itame hada. The hamon is a Soshu-style suguha that is present the length of the blade through the kissaki where it ends in a maru boshi. The hamon shows a deep nioi guchi and activities like yubashiri in and along the hamon. The blade is signed Masatsugu. He was also known as Ki Masatsugu and worked in Fukuoka on Kyushu during the war. He was known for making Gendaito, or swords forged using traditional materials and techniques. Likely this tanto was made in the late 1930’s or 1940’s. The blade comes in original formal custom lacquer mountings. They are in Near MINT condition. The tsuka and saya are both wood lacquered an amber color. They show just a few small areas of cracking and missing finish, retaining roughly 95-97% original finish. The blade is in Near MINT condition. There are no nicks, little to no rust, and just some scattered small scratches along the length of the blade. There are no major flaws like hagire. Given this sword’s history, craftsmanship, reputation of the swordsmith, and high quality mounts, I think this piece would be an outstanding addition for a collector of WW2 militaria or Japanese swords.
