Description: A 5 inch tall cylinder-shaped light COBALT BLUE colored old medicine glass that is enameled or pyro glazed BROMO SELTZER. This glass originally went with a large counter-top Bromo Seltzer dispenser that used to sit on the top of the old soda fountains of old drug stores. The product was a powder, sold and dispensed one dose at a time, into this glass, where it was mixed with soda water and served. According to several old timer's, Bromo Seltzer was the world's GREATEST HEAD - ACHE CURE known to mankind until the Pure Food and Drug Administration shut it down in the 1900's. This glass looks to be enameled, pyro-glazed, or it has is an ACL (Applied Ceramic Label) printing on it. And what makes this glass stand out from the others that we've had is the glass itself, it is heavily whittle marked, it has the character of hammered brass or like the whittle marks left in wood, it is truely EXQUISITE! From this type of manufacturer, it would date back to the early to mid 20th century. Glass reads : "BROMO - / SELTZER". Condition: Glass is in sparkling clean condition. It has NO cracks, chips, dings, damage, etc. PLEASE SEE pictures for best idea of overall appearance/condition. Age: An ORIGINAL ANTIQUE blown-glass tumbler, ca early 1900's.Shipping: FREE domestic shipping. We do not falsify information on the Customs Form, such as a price other than what the actual purchase price is, so please do not request us to do so. We ship several times a week and your prompt payment will hasten the turn-around time. This glass is of exceptional quality, it actually has very light beveling or fluting, like whittle marks in it, so that when hold it up and look through it in the light while turning it, it just come to life! As mentioned, this glass was made to accompany one of the early Bromo Seltzer dispensers that could be found in early American drug store soda fountains. It sat on the base of the dispenser where a customer would pay for one dose and the dispenser would dispense one dose (heaping teaspoon) at a time, into the glass. Then soda water was added to the glass and there you have it. Here is a little info. that we found out about the product, Bromo Seltzer, and its inventor, Issac Emerson:"Bromo-Seltzer (acetaminophen, sodium bicarbonate, and citric acid), was a brand of antacid to relieve pain occurring together with heartburn, upset stomach, or acid indigestion. First produced by inventor Isaac E. Emerson's drug company of Baltimore, Maryland, in 1888, Bromo-Seltzer was sold in the United States in the form of effervescent granules which must be mixed with water before ingestion. The product took its name from a component of the original formula, sodium bromide. Each dose contained 3.2 mEq/teaspoon of this active ingredient. Bromides are a class of tranquilizers that were withdrawn from the U.S. market in 1975 due to their toxicity. Their sedative effect probably accounted for Bromo-Seltzer's popularity as a remedy for hangovers. Early formulas also used, as the analgesic ingredient, acetanilide, now known as a poisonous substance." And here is a little history of the company that produced it: "Bromo-Seltzer's main offices and main factory were located in downtown Baltimore, Maryland, at the corner of West Lombard and South Eutaw Streets. The factory's most notable feature was the clock tower, built in 1911, which featured "BROMO-SELTZER" in place of the numerals on all four clock faces. The tower originally held a 50 foot tall Bromo-Seltzer bottle on top, glowing blue and rotating. The bottle/sign weighed 20 tons and included over 300 incandescent light bulbs, topped with a crown. The sign was removed in 1936 because of structural concerns."Wonder where the 50 foot bottle is today? Anyway, a great history. You can find the dispenser's listed on eBay from time to time, the older ones have a cobalt blue glass base that is embossed BROMO SELTZER, similar to this glass. I think that this drinking glass was supplied with a dispenser when purchased by the drug store, I am not sure. We have also seen a newer, shorter wider glass that has the name "BROMO-SELTZER" glazed or silk-screened on the side. This drinking glass here is probably rarer than the dispenser itself as it was handled frequently and is made of thin, delicate glass, so they broke easily. Then there are also the large cobalt blue bottles that sat on the dispenser upside down. We actually have one of them for sale as well, if interested, PLEASE "see other items", it is not only embossed upside down but it also still has the ORIGINAL UPSIDE DOWN labels. But this glass here is one of the few that have survived the 'ravages' of time, check it out! Terms of Sale: Our goal is 100% customer satisfaction.
