We measured out what you would need for a few potted plants or a terraruim set up ahead of time.Below will be the specs and a bunch of benifits why you should use pumice in your bio active set ups or when planting and potting plants. Also Great For Incubating Reptile eggs. How does vermiculite help?Vermiculite traps nutrients and moistureImproves soil structure, helps to break up bad or sticky soilCreates a growing medium that is conducive to good root growthCreates aeriation of the soil improving soil organism healthRetains and distributes liquid fertilizer at a more even rate Vermiculite is silvery-gray and flaky. In fact, it is so light that you can move the little particles by blowing on them. The product does not contain any fertilizer, so you would have to mix it with something offering nutrients (such as compost) if you will not be applying fertilizer periodically.Vermiculite is a great addition to potting soil in containers, helping to improve drainage and moisture retention. It's an ideal medium to use for storing bulbs or root crops over winter, as it absorbs any moisture that might cause decay. It's a good addition to recently seeded lawns. A 1/4-inch layer of vermiculite helps keep grass seed from drying out while it germinates. It's even a good addition to worm bins, providing grit that helps worms digest food. Why Vermiculite Is Used in Soilless Potting MixesVermiculite boasts several characteristics that make it useful to gardeners. The product is:LightweightHighly absorbent. Its particles absorb water and nutrients (which must still be supplied) and retain them in a soilless potting mix. Whenever the plants' roots are ready to use the water and nutrients, they are able to absorb, thanks to the vermiculite.Neutral in terms of soil pH, so that you do not have to worry about compensating for pH alterations due to the presence of the soil amendment. How to Use Vermiculite in a Soilless Potting MixYou can buy soilless potting mixes that already contain vermiculite. But you may find that you can save money by buying the vermiculite separately and mixing it yourself. In that case, here is a general-purpose formula to go by:4 to 6 parts sphagnum peat moss1 part perlite1 part vermiculiteHow Vermiculite Differs From PerlitePerlite is that white material in soilless potting mixes that looks like little chunks of styrofoam. In its natural state, it has a pearl-like shine to it that accounts for the name, "perlite." While vermiculite and perlite are two completely different substances, they do have some things in common; both are:mined out of the ground (perlite is a volcanic mineral)later heated, causing them to expandused as soil amendments, both in soilless potting mixes indoors and to improve garden soil outdoorslightweightsterilehave a neutral pHcontain no nutrientsBut whereas vermiculite is especially valued for its capacity to retain water, the value of perlite lies much more in its ability to provide aeration. When to Use Vermiculite vs. PerliteBecause it retains water so well, add more vermiculite than perlite to your mix when you are creating a growing medium for plants that dry out easily. But vermiculite is useful to gardeners beyond functioning as one component in a mixed growing medium. It is also the preferred material for covering seeds when you are starting seeds indoors. There are three main reasons why vermiculite serves this function so well (better than perlite, peat moss, regular soil, etc.):When you are starting seeds indoors, they need to be kept consistently moist. If they are allowed to dry out, they will not germinate. The capacity that vermiculite has to retain water is greater than that possessed by perlite, making the former an ideal medium for keeping seeds moist. Not all seeds should be covered, but those that do need to be covered by a medium consisting of very small particles. This allows the young plants to easily push up through after sprouting. Vermiculite fits the bill perfectly, being finer than perlite. There are different grades of vermiculite, so choose the finest grade for covering seeds.Vermiculite is a sterile medium, making it great as a medium for seed starting due to its lack of bacterial or fungal problems.Straight vermiculite can also be an excellent choice for a growing medium in which to root cuttings Select a medium grade vermiculite for this purpose.Because it does such a good job at aeration, perlite is the go-to product in mixes for plants that do not mind drying out and crave outstanding drainage. So add more perlite than vermiculite (or exclusively perlite) to your mix when you are creating a growing medium for plants such as cacti. Vermiculite Soil: The Benefits And UsesAlthough vermiculite soil is usually found packaged next to other potting soil, it is not technically soil at all. It is, however, a mineral that has a strong resemblance to mica and when treated with heat the vermiculite expands into particles that are not only lightweight but also contain many layers. These particles help to lighten up heavy soils while the layers hold nutrients and moisture to help plants grow.Vermiculite takes a layered form of flat sheets in its natural state. When it is heated to create vermiculite soil, it expands the layers to about 25 times their original size. Small nuggets that are about a half-inch long and absorbent and lightweight are created when heated.Function And BenefitsVermiculite soil can be used to aerate and lighten heavy soil, germinate seeds, or use it as mulch for outdoor shrubs and plants. It is also ideal to keep your house plant?s soil well-drained.This soil is odorless, non-toxic, and sterile and it will not rot or mold. The absorbent properties in vermiculite soil allow it to retain the magnesium, calcium, and potassium that plants need. Additionally, if you mix it with composted pine bark or peat you can create an excellent home to hold plant food and moisture. Vermiculite soil also mixes fabulously with herbicides and pesticides.Rooting CuttingsA medium-grade vermiculite soil is a standard that is used by professionals for most horticultural tasks, especially the insertion of cuttings. It can be used straight out of the bag, insert the cuttings and water thoroughly. You need not be concerned with over-watering as long as the container provides drainage. This soil will promote better-than-average root growth in less time.Soil ConditioningIf the native soil is sticky or heavy, mixing in a bit of vermiculite soil creates air channels that allow the soil to breathe. If you mix it in vegetable and flower gardens as well as potted plants, you can provide the necessary air needed to maintain vigorous plant growth. Also, sandy soils mixed with vermiculite will help the soil hold water as well as air that is needed.House PlantsVermiculite soil eliminates the packed-down soil problem that often occurs in flower pots. You will mix the vermiculite with composted pine bark and/or peat. This will provide incredible moisture and air control, lighten and aerate the soil, and allows the roots to spread out in the pot requiring less watering.Winter Or Summer MulchUsing a couple of inches of vermiculite soil as a mulch around roses, shrubs, dahlias, garden plants, and tomatoes prevents them from drying out and insulates them against cold weather. Plants that are protected can withstand winter temperatures easier. Also, it does not become soggy or matted due to its pore structure keeping it from becoming too saturated. additionally, if you apply it directly after the first heavy rain of the summer you can prevent the soil from drying out which causes damage to the plant.Vermiculite and Roots TransplantingDig your hold a minimum of six inches larger than the roots of the plant. Mix the vermiculite soil with the removed topsoil and place this mixture around the roots. This will protect the roots from the sun and wind and provide even moisture control resulting in healthier plants.Home Floral ArrangementsFill your container with vermiculite soil and level it off. Thoroughly saturate with water and pour off any excess and then insert your flowers in for a neat arrangement. This type of floral arrangement will allow the flowers to stay fresh for days without any water spillage issues.Advantages of VermiculiteVermiculite is a naturally occurring mineral material that has been used since the 1940s as an insulating and flame-resistant material. Some of its advantages include:It is lightweight and has high compressive strength, making it ideal for use in containers.Gardeners can recycle it with relative ease.It quickly breaks down in the environment when exposed to humidity and heat.Reptile egg incubation benifitsVermiculite is the Effective Way of Hatching Reptile EggsUltimate incubation media for snakes, lizards, tortoises, turtles, and more! ...Discourage fungal growth and supports a clean and sterile environment for reptile eggs.Retain water and slowly release it throughout incubation so that the eggs have the moisture they need to hatch.Easy to work, just wet the vermiculite in an incubating container, burry the eggs under it. ...
