Description: This 20 by 28 poster from 1945 was commissioned by the U.S. War Manpower Commission. The poster shows a bullet-ridden and tattered Japanese and German WWII flags. The flags are tied to a pole, which could be a bamboo branch or a pole made of human bones. The War Manpower Commission was created by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in April 18, 1942. The function of the Commission was to train and recruit workers for war and essential civilian industries and to increase labor efficiency. The War Manpower Commission set up a plan to help displaced workers and veterans find jobs before it was dismantled in 1945. This poster was created in 1945, after the Nazis were defeated in Europe as a last push for workers in the United States. They could go to their U.S. employment service to find an appropriate job that would help ending the war with Japan. The image was designed by Allen Saalburg (1899-1987), who was an illustrator and printmaker, son of a newspaper cartoonist. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. Separation at top fold, no rips, strong color.
