Description: Rare 1939 private publication "Buh Partrdige Out Hides Buh Rabbit" by Albert H. Stoddard. Signed in blue fountain pen by the author. Stoddard tells this animal tale in the Gullah dialect in an attempt to preserve the language used by former slaves in South Carolina and Georgia. The three pictures before the last picture are text from "Slavery and Rice Culture in Low Country Georgia 1750-1860" by Julia Floyd Smith and reference the Stoddard plantation and the importance of this story in black folklore. The last photo is a reference to this work in the "Annotated Bibliography of Southern American English" by James B. McMillan and Michael B. Montgormery. Cover has chipping around the edges; interior pages are intact. Paper has browned with age. Thanks for looking.
