When upgrading these suspensions to such setups as a parallel multi-link with coilovers for additional control of your rear axle’s placement and the minimization of pinion angle change under acceleration, you will find that these systems do not have a way to control lateral axle movement when cornering. That is where the Panhard bar comes into play. The Panhard bar has been used in various suspension designs for over 100 years and is quite simple in design and function. The Panhard bar mounts between the chassis and the rear axle assembly, allowing the axle freedom to move up and down through normal suspension articulation without the axle moving laterally. Factory implementation of a Panhard bar has been used by all the major automotive manufacturers over the years, but these are fixed length bars where no Panhard bar adjustment can be made. An aftermarket universal Panhard bar kit is adjustable, which aids in centering the axle in the body. If there is any detriment to a Panhard bar (besides being a tad difficult to route tailpipes around) is that as the axle moves up and down the Panhard bar causes the axle to move in a small arc, changing the axle location laterally as the suspension moves. This is only a real concern if you have very tight tire to quarter panel gaps or extremely low ride height. Heavy Duty Steel Construction Compliments Your Aftermarket Rear Suspension Starting with a 22-1/2-inch long and 7/8-inch diameter DOM steel tube with .156-inch wall thickness for our Panhard rod, we thread the steel tube for a pair of 5/8-18 rod ends with left hand and right hand threads. This allows Panhard bar adjustment right on the vehicle with only having to loosen the jam nuts for adjustment. The included weld-on frame bracket is made from 5/16-inch thick A36 steel plate, as is the axle mounting bracket, which uses slightly thicker 3/8-inch steel. We include attaching hardware for the Panhard bar’s rod ends to the frame and axle brackets along with full instructions.
