It is known almost entirely by reputation. In the nature of things, works printed in magazines of small circulation (Reedy’s Mirror) seldom attract wide or lasting attention. If there is an exception to this rule, it is because the work itself is in some way memorable, and because it arouses far more than casual interest on the part of its readers. In short, it must make up in enthusiasm what it lacks in number. This is precisely what happened when "The City That Has Fallen" appeared in 1906. In 1933 when published by the Book Club of California (twenty-seven years later), it was still talked about—but seen even less frequently. The persistence of its reputation over so long a period is curious. One may not hear it mentioned for a year, two years, five years—then someone is sure to state definitely that Reedy's story in the Mirror is "the best thing ever written about San Francisco". As to the merits of this opinion, the ultimate purchaser can best judge for him or her self.
