This March 17, this 1801 Document was written by the President Jefferson regarding U.S. affairs with France, the XYZ Affair and other topics. The original document was physically transferred to this ORIGINAL PAPER on the Letterpress that Thomas Jefferson invented & used in the White House. Because government officials and especially diplomats were required to make multiple copies of their correspondence, these officials were usually assigned secretaries. In 1783, after seeing a letter made by John Adams using a very large Letterpress in England, Jefferson ordered such a machine for himself. He then invented a smaller Letterpress for himself that he could use when he traveled. However, he was never happy with the very thin paper that had to be used and over time, the ink would "blur" and run, as we can see in the document. President THOMAS JEFFERSON 1743-1826 Thomas Jefferson (born April 2 [April 13, New Style], 1743, Shadwell, Virginia [U.S.]—died July 4, 1826, Monticello, Virginia, U.S.) was the draftsman of the Declaration of Independence of the United States and the nation’s first secretary of state (1789–94) and second vice president (1797–1801) and, as the third president (1801–09), the statesman responsible for the Louisiana Purchase. An early advocate of total separation of church and state, he also was the founder and architect of the University of Virginia and the most eloquent American proponent of individual freedom as the core meaning of the American Revolution. Long regarded as America’s most distinguished “apostle of liberty,” Jefferson has come under increasingly critical scrutiny within the scholarly world. At the popular level, both in the United States and abroad, he remains an incandescent icon, an inspirational symbol for both major U.S. political parties, as well as for dissenters in communist China, liberal reformers in central and eastern Europe, and aspiring democrats in Africa and Latin America. His image has suffered, however, as the focus on racial equality has prompted a more negative reappraisal of his dependence upon slavery and his conviction that American society remain a white man’s domain. Especially disturbing to many were the DNA results of the 1998 study revealing that Jefferson had almost certainly fathered a child with his slave Sally Hemings, thirty years his junior. (For more on this story, see “Tom and Sally”: The Jefferson - Hemings paternity debate.) The huge gap between his lyrical expression of liberal ideals and the more attenuated reality of his own life has transformed Jefferson into America’s most problematic and paradoxical hero. The Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C., was dedicated to him on April 13, 1943, the 200th anniversary of his birth. After President John Adams lost his re-election to Jefferson, he retired to his farm in Quincy. John Adams then penned many elaborate letters to Thomas Jefferson. On July 4, 1826, Adams whispered his last words: "Thomas Jefferson survives." But Jefferson had actually died at Monticello a few hours earlier. Both men on the same day, JULY 4th, very apropos... This would make a GREAT GIFT for a Thomas Jefferson & History Collector... On 1 September 1785, Jefferson wrote James Madison asking if he had such a machine, telling him that the machine cost £14 with an additional cost of £1 for a ream of special paper. “You should get one . . . I would give ten times that sum that I had had it from the date of the stamp act” in 1765. Madison responded about six months later saying that he did not own such a machine, “but must postpone that conveniency to other wants which will absorb my little resources. I am fully apprized of the value of this machine and mean to get one when I can better afford it, and may have more use for it.” Madison was sure that “it would be a very economical acquisition to all our public offices which are obliged to furnish copies of papers belonging to them.” This Original THOMAS JEFFERSON Handwriting Artifact is Absolutely Authentic, is in very Good Condition, and displayed in a Creative Framed Exhibit.
