PLAY REAL BLADESWilson - Top Club on TourSam Snead, Patty Berg and club-makers Hall of Famer Bob Mendralla joined the Wilson Advisory Staff by 1947, and directed the company in the production of clubs for years to come. In the1970’s, Wilson Staff introduced more revolutions into the equipment world, including the Dyna-Power, the Fluid Feel and the FG Series blades. By 1983, Wilson clubs were the number one club on the PGA Tour.1980's and 1990'sWilson remained the top club throughout the 1980's, introducing the Staff Tour Blade in 1985. This club was introduced alongside the Staff persimmon woods, which featured aluminum face inserts, and went on to become the top woods in golf. The Staff FG-51 was introduced in 1990 and new Dyna-Powered wedges were made by Mendralla, along with a reincarnation of Snead's R-90 sand wedge.Wilson STAFF DYNAPOWER 2-9 Irons Steel Shafts RH - 8 clubs totalThis Vintage collector set has the fluid feel bore through hosel, This model was a premier Wilson set for forged blade collectors and players. For display this set is just fine. The 5 iron is standard 38 inches, the 9 iron is 36 inches. The Golf Pride Swing Rite grips are actually playable. It is likely that this set did not come with a matching wedge as that was often true during the forties and fifties. For you history buffs, the original Wilson Dynapower was actually an early application of iron design fundamentals we take for granted now: mass behind the hitting area coupled with a low and centered CG.In 1950, Wilson introduced Top Notch Dyna-Weighting in its forged blades, which moved weight down and toward the toe. Dyna-Weighting nudged the sweet spot away from the heel and moved the CG lower. In 1956, Dyna-Weighting morphed into Dyna-Power with a Wilson-patented bore-through hosel. That removed weight from both the neck and hosel. And if you read MyGolfSpy at all, you know club designers love saving weight in an area where it doesn’t do anything and moving it someplace useful. By 1962, Wilson added Fluid Feel to Dynapower, which further removed weight from the heel, giving designers even more discretionary weight. And, as any good MGS reader knows, discretionary weight is the Holy Grail for improving launch, power and forgiveness.Dynapower technology is pretty standard now but it was groundbreaking back in the day. And it proved so successful that Dynapower stayed in Wilson’s marketing and technical lexicon until 1975.Is Wilson “OG”?“We’re starting to use this language called ‘The Original Golf Brand,'” says Wilson Golf Global Marketing Director Tom Gruger. “When you talk about other longstanding names in golf, they’re not around anymore.”The Wilson Golf brand is 109 years old but when you think “OG,” Wilson probably isn’t top of mind. Wilson does have history, however, and Gruger says that history—and the Dynapower name—resonate with two very different demographics.“The first is what we call the ‘in-the-know player,’” Gruger explains. “This is someone who’s a little bit older and a good player. They’re not really wowed by $50-million product launches. They’re going to say, ‘I’m going to hit it and see if it works and I’m going to call bullshit on all the marketing.’”This group instantly taps into Dynapower, says Gruger. “We see this whole misty-eyed, ‘let me tell you about my dad’s set.’ It’s a really easy connection to make.”There’s also a younger group which Wilson calls the “young executive.” That group is all about retro.“They love the retro look, feel and vibe,” says Gruger. “They don’t remember our past. Instead, they feel like they’re just discovering us. They like retro brands and that’s our history. It’s not a marketing campaign. It’s just who we are.”“We like this idea of the ‘original golf brand,’” says Gruger. “This historical stuff, it’s not just being retro for retro’s sake. It’s art. We’ve dug into the archives for old catalog covers and things like that. These are images people would literally put on their wall as cool, retro golf designs.” Review/Info: "I still have my grandfather's Wilson's... The Irons are great, but I am afraid I was not too careful with his persimmons... water damage. When he passed I was still in my early 20's. I was willed his clubs because I was always fascinated with them as a child. Though my parents met at a country club through the memberships of their parents... I never became a golfer until I was in my early 40's.I moved around a lot when I was young... Those clubs just got tossed hither and yon... I went to work for a competitive man whose only passion outside of work, was golf. Being competitive myself I dragged out that poor old Wilson set to try and take him on... You should have seen the expression on his face when I showed up with this set (water damaged persimmons and all!).We bonded that day, and he sold me is "old" Ping Eye 2's... (still have them too actually). I caught the bug... Big time!!!I am now in my mid 50's, and a certifiable golf nut!!! Can't stop thinking of the game, or lamenting about the wasted 42 years of not playing...I still have the Wilson's. I take them to the range from time to time to remind me of my Grandfather... I can't hit them worth a damn I'm sorry to say.I really hate that I did not get to play with my Grandfather, or learn from him... Nor my father... by the time I became an avid serial golfer, he was physically unable to even ride around a course with me... My Dad had that passion as well... Since my Dad and Mom divorced when I was 3, I never got close enough to share in that passion... mostly Sunday morning brunch followed by a quick return to my Mom.I won't make that same mistake with my sons... they ride with me every chance I can get... They aren't interested in golf... YET... but one day... If they get into it late like I did... I want them to at least remember what it meant to me, my father, and my grandfather... When they do, those Wilson's will be there for them too." This set of Staff Dynapower irons are in mostly good condition, there are minimal (normal), chatter, scratches, and dings, the Swing Rite grips have been retained for authenticity, new looking shafts, as well as minimal groove wear (other than the 7 iron). Some clubs have some missing chrome.
