Description: All recordings are from the original source material and digitally re-mastered to reduce surface noise. Welcome Lewis (1907-1975) She was popular on radio in the late 1920's into the 1940's. Originally from California, she started out in vaudeville for a period of 4 years. Neighbors asked her back home how she was named "Welcome"? She replied that she was named after the family doormat. Welcome was one of nine children. She was discovered by an NBC executive after hearing her at a party in Yonkers, New York. He requested an audition and she was hired for several NBC radio programs. Welcome also later performed on CBS. She was known as the little girl with the big voice. Welcome's height was just 5 feet and she weighed 90 pounds. Her voice being a low contralto was perfect for the throaty blues torch songs of the period. This CD includes her major recorded output made at the height of her recording career. These recordings show her expressive singing style that was very popular with radio audiences of the time. There is a fascinating quality and certain vulnerability in her song interpretation that was unique.
